Frequently Asked Questions

▶ How accurate is the Octopus Energy tariff calculator?

Our calculator uses live pricing data directly from the Octopus Energy API, updated daily. The calculations are based on your actual usage patterns and current tariff rates, making them highly accurate for comparison purposes. However, actual savings may vary based on changes in usage, price fluctuations, and individual circumstances.

▶ What is p/kWh and where do I find my current rate?

p/kWh stands for "pence per kilowatt-hour" - the cost you pay for each unit of electricity. You can find this on your electricity bill under "Unit Rate" or "Energy Rate", in your online account dashboard, or in your energy supplier's mobile app. The UK average is currently around 24-27p/kWh (December 2025).

▶ What's the difference between Agile, Go, Cosy, and Intelligent Octopus tariffs?

Agile Octopus: Half-hourly pricing that varies with wholesale costs - best for flexible usage.
Octopus Go: Super cheap 4-hour overnight rate (12:30am-4:30am) - ideal for EV charging overnight.
Cosy Octopus: Two daily cheap periods (4am-7am & 1pm-4pm) - great for heat pumps and EVs.
Intelligent Octopus Go: Smart charging integration with 6 hours of cheap rates - requires compatible EV/charger.

▶ Can I use this calculator if I don't have an electric vehicle?

Yes! While some Octopus tariffs are designed for EV owners, this calculator helps anyone compare tariffs based on their usage patterns. Agile and Cosy can benefit households with flexible usage timing, even without an EV. Simply enter your current usage and standing charge to see potential savings.

▶ How do I switch to a recommended Octopus tariff?

If you're already an Octopus Energy customer, you can usually switch tariffs through your online account or by contacting customer support. If you're with a different supplier, you'll need to switch to Octopus Energy first - they'll handle the switching process for you. The calculator helps you make an informed decision before switching.
